OLMC was alive with the sound of music, tunes, melodies, ballads, symphonies, dancing, and memories at the College Variety Night on Friday, 9 May.
Variety Night is an annual event which showcases some of OLMC’s best creative and performing talents. Last Friday, the OLMC community came together to celebrate Variety Night and the passion and dedication of students who brought the stage to life.
The night began with a beautiful rendition of Does the World Say by the College Choir, which was followed a powerful performance by the College Concert band of Arabian Nights. OLMC offers a wide range of diverse music groups, and other ensembles such as the flute and clarinet ensembles and drumline who also performed on the night. Each week, these groups meet to perfect their tunes, and their hard work was evident in the emotion behind their performance, casting a dynamic atmosphere ranging from peaceful to powerful.
The College Orchestra was a standout ensemble, as they performed a mashup of songs from the new Wicked movie. Defying Gravity, Popular, Dancing Through Life; these songs were brought to life by the talented musicians of the orchestra on a range of brass, strings, percussion, and woodwind instruments.
OLMC is also lucky enough to have some beautiful student solo and group acts. Variety Night is one of the opportunities these students have to showcase their amazing talents. From powerful solo ballads to duo acts of singing and music, and even trios of majestic melodies, these students truly put on a show with each of their unique styles in music shining through in their performances. OLMC was even lucky enough to feature a multi-cultural dance group, who highlighted the beauty of diversity and unity in the fields of dance and performance.
The College Dance group can also be credited with an amazing show, as they showcased a powerful dance to a mashup of Rihanna hits. Their moves were electric; highlighting the dedication and practice they have put into their performance to truly make it spectacular.
Another highlight of the night was a feature of student artworks, reflecting a theme of hope. These artists showcased what hope means to them, featuring a diverse range of styles and interpretations to the theme. Variety night is not just a celebration of the performing arts, but also of artists in visual arts and design.
The atmosphere of the night was powerful. Many hugs were shared backstage, cheers of congratulations after each act from fellow students, and flowers and praises from parents at the end of the show.
Art has the power to unify individuals through an appreciation for hidden meaning behind creations of music, artwork, and dance. The bringing together of a community through a love and attraction to a deeper meaning. OLMC Variety Night was not just a celebration of the arts, but also a gathering of a community to appreciate the true power behind the arts, unity, and connectedness.
