On Thursday 24 August, the College will be held a Careers Breakfast for students in Years 10-12 and their parents. Focusing on careers within the health sector, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology and exercise physiology, the event provided different perspectives on the career options and pathways within this industry.
Students are more engaged in education and more motivated about their future when they have a clear understanding of themselves and how they might live and work when they leave school. Career education and guidance is essential in preparing Mercy Girls for their future. Careers are now increasingly seen not as being ‘chosen’ but as being constructed through the series of choices about learning and work that people make throughout their lives.
The OLMC Allied Health Careers Breakfast aimed to outline options available within the health sector to our students so they can make informed choices about specific careers and educational opportunities.

At a special ceremony held at the College in March 2022, the process of transferring the Canonical Sponsorship Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta from the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta to Mercy Partners, was completed. The event was attended by Sisters of Mercy, current College Board Members, staff and students, and members of the Mercy Partners Stewards, Council and Executive, and it followed six months after the official signing of documents on 18 October, 2021.
The Ritual marked a very important milestone in the College’s long, rich history. Since establishing the College in 1889, the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta have provided oversight and guidance as Canonical Sponsors.
Below is a reflection on the ritual from Sister Mary-Louise Petro, Congregation Leader of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta.
There were many emotions experienced on the day of the Transfer ceremony. There was a sense of anticipation for a vibrant new life for the future of Our Lady of Mercy College and pride that after 133 years of Mercy education we had a College ready and able to fly in new and unknown ways. There were tinges of sadness as the mothering Congregation was taking a step back from such a precious and long-standing ministry.
Some of the most memorable and touching moments of the day were the cleansing ceremony conducted by Darug women, Shanaya Donavan and Aunty Julie Webb. Their beautiful movements re-instated the Darug heritage and paved the way for this new journey of OLMC. To sit with Catherine McAuley, sense her presence, hear our Mercy story and feel the thread of Catherine’s dream woven with ours over the years was a powerful reminder of the strength of charism. A very poignant moment came with the reflection by student, Katherine Baker, who brought tears to many eyes with her deep appreciation of her Mercy education, her commitment to the Mercy values and assurance that the Sisters would not be forgotten.
The ceremony brought together the journey undertaken by the Congregation and OLMC to ensure that the College would flourish into the future. Mercy Partners fulfilled all our desired criteria and the ceremony reflected the good-will, commitment and strong governance that we desired. OLMC has found a home within the Mercy family where it can continue to educate young women where its values will be upheld and strengthened, its Board and staff supported and affirmed and where Mercy will continue to shine its light into the world. I know that the Sisters of Mercy will continue to be an integral part of the college through strong relationships and caring friendships.

Book week was celebrated at the College from the 20-26 August. Numerous activities were held focussing on the theme ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’. A beautiful Dreaming Zone was set up in the Library for our girls to come and read a book at recess or lunch whilst listening to calm music. Girls made badges at lunchtime, participated in scavenger hunts and competed against each other in quizzes and competitions.
The celebrations culminated at the end of the week with students and staff dressing up as their favourite book/television/Cosplay character. Imaginations ran wild with witches and wizards to Mary Poppins and Where’s Wally. Thanks to our creative Library Staff for making the week so special.

On Monday 18 October 2021, the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta officially signed documentation that transferred the governance of OLMC Parramatta to Mercy Partners. The virtual event was held via Zoom and was attended by the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, representatives from Mercy Partners in Brisbane, Chair of the OLMC Board Kerrie Walshaw, Principal Lucie Farrugia and other College staff. Whilst this marks the official handover, a ritual event will be held in March 2022.
This momentous occasion is an historic moment for the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta and our College and it is a fitting opportunity to reflect on how OLMC is an enduring work of the Sisters of Mercy. The wonderful school community we have here today and our thriving culture of excellence was made possible by the hard work and dedication of the founding Sisters who came here from Callan in Ireland and every other Sister of Mercy in the Parramatta congregation who came after them. Their legacy will always be interwoven into the fabric of this school, and through this work, they will continue to positively impact the lives of girls and their families into the future. It is because of them that we thrive today, well into the 21st century, as a Catholic school providing excellence in education in the Mercy Tradition.

Our College is proud to announce that Yasmine Alwakal (Year 11) has taken the world by storm in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Competition (WIDPSC) finishing in 10th place overall. Yasmine has achieved a remarkable result - the best result ever achieved by an OLMC student!
The Championships were due to be held in Shanghai, China in April, however, COVID-19 prevented the event from going ahead. Fortunately, the titles were rescheduled through Zoom from the 14-24 August.
WIDPSC requires students to interact and collaborate with like-minded peers from diverse and different schools, cultural backgrounds and countries. Each participant must compete in four different events: Debate, Impromptu Speaking, Persuasive or After Dinner Speaking and Interpretive Reading. The event provides an avenue for individual students, not only to practise and test their oratorical skills but to value the importance of the art of expression.
Yasmine spoke with around 60 of the best students around the world that all qualified through the National Titles.
In her 10-minute Persuasive speech, Yasmine explored the unreliable nature of evidence.
An excerpt from the novel ‘Night Rainbow’, was chosen by Yasmine for her Interpretive reading. This focussed on the nature of grieving.
Two debates were live on Zoom, the first one about whether private schools should be forced to subsidise those students in need in their local area and the second about whether we should have a four-day working week.
For her first live impromptu, Yasmine chose ‘Outrage’ and looked at how we need to change the Australian image. The topic of ‘You’ll be caught’ was chosen for her second impromptu speaking about the importance of monitoring the idea of truth in media.
Congratulations Yasmine. Your name will go down in the record books!

Dear OLMC Families
We wish to advise that OLMC will be non-operational on Monday 10 August 2020. Students will move to remote learning on Monday.
The school has been advised by NSW Health that a student attending OLMC has tested positive for COVID-19. The school will be non-operational for the on-site attendance of staff and students to allow time for the school to complete the contact tracing process and have the school cleaned.
As soon as we were contacted by NSW Health, we began working closely together to identify students or staff who have had ‘close contact’ with the person who has COVID-19.
Students and staff must self-isolate until receiving further advice from NSW Health or communication from the school. NSW Health will conduct ‘contact tracing’ and will notify close contacts and advise them about what they need to do next.
NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or has flu-like symptoms to be tested at one of the COVID-19 clinics.
Further information on COVID 19 is available on NSW Health website.
Further advice will be provided over the weekend advising when the school will resume on-site learning.
The safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is of paramount importance to us. As such we will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Kind regards
Marie Wood
Principal (Acting)

Thank you to all who assisted to ensure this morning was a wonderful celebration of love, recognition and prayer. I would especially like to acknowledge the work of the 2019-2020 Liturgy Leaders, Gabriella Nimmo and Amelie Loof, as well as the girls and their fathers who read, participated in processions, assisted with distributing Communion and handed out the lovely native flower arrangements and prayer cards.
A celebration like this would not be complete without the P&F who provided an absolutely delicious breakfast, following the Mass, served in the Catherine McAuley Room in the Convent. The ladies worked tirelessly with ever-increasing numbers to ensure that there was ample food and opportunity to engage in not only a shared meal, but precious time for the girls to spend with their Dads. The morning of Friday February 8 was an historic occasion with the official launch of our 130th year anniversary celebrations at the Opening College Mass.
Father Walter Fogarty, College Chaplain, celebrated this historic Mass in the AMCC.
At the end of the Mass, Sr Mary-Louise Petro, Congregation Leader of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, presented the College with a gift for our anniversary - a plaque displaying individual images of the founding Sisters. In her address, Sister Mary-Louise encouraged each of us to choose our 'Spirit Sister', the founding Sister who speaks to us and inspires us in our own way.
We were privileged to be joined former Principals of the College including Sister Janet Woods, Sister Ailsa Mackinnon and Mrs Kitty Guerin, as well as many other Sisters of Mercy.
It was also lovely to have in attendance Federal Member for Parramatta Julie Owens and State MP Geoff Lee as well as members of the College Board and P&F.

2018 marks the 20th year that OLMC has been participating in the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers initiative.
Throughout December, students and staff bring in hamper items as donations. In the last week of school, these are sorted and put together by the students.
This year over 35 hampers were created with the many generous donations. These are then delivered to local families in need.
The Vinnies Christmas Hamper initiative has become part of Christmas tradition at OLMC; its a practical way to make Mercy a verb at this special time of year.

Invictus is about the dedication of the men and women who served their countries, confronted hardship and refused to be defined by their injuries. Invictus is about the families and friends who face the shock of learning that their loved ones have been injured or fallen ill, and then rally to support them on their journey of recovery. Above all, Invictus is about the example to the world that all servicemen and women, injured or not, provide about the importance of service and duty.
Founded by HRH The Duke of Sussex in 2014, the Invictus Games are an international adaptive sports event for wounded, injured and ill active duty and veteran service personnel

I hope that my girls consider an education in the Mercy tradition for their own girls, should they be blessed with children, and thus continue the path that we consciously chose for them."
"I want my girls to make a difference, maybe not on their own, but certainly to add their support to a groundswell that will make a difference. Catherine McAuley's legacy lives on at OLMC - the College's commitment to empowering young women attests to this."

For the first time in the history of Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta, two women have been awarded the Annual Catherine McAuley Alumnae Award.
Jenny Da Rin and Jacquie Scott accepted their awards at a special College assembly on Tuesday February 20 in the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre. They delivered speeches to the students and staff present and participated in a short Q&A session, before being presented with their awards.
Jenny Da Rin (Class of 1981) is currently the Australian High Commissioner to the Republic of Vanuatu. She commenced her three-year term in January 2017 and manages Australia’s diplomatic, trade and development cooperation activities. Jenny has recently been leading Australia’s response to the volcanic eruption on Ambae Island, which has necessitated a full evacuation of the island and displacement of over 11,000 people.
Jacquie Scott (Class of 1975) is a registered nurse whose career in England led her to eventually become Chair of the RCN London Society of Orthopaedics. She has worked with the British Council and supported Palestinian nurses with orthopaedic developments in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. She was responsible for establishing the first Dip HE in Ortho and Trauma at Oxford University and also for setting up the first Bone Infection Unit in the UK. Jacquie has worked in a number of management roles in the NHS such as Director of Nursing, Director of Strategy and Planning and Chief Executive.
Principal Stephen Walsh said the winners were a testament to the quality of a Mercy Education at OLMC Parramatta: “Both women have pursued excellence in their own ways and are brilliant examples of living a life inspired by the Mercy Values and Sisters of Mercy Founder, Catherine McAuley!”
Jenny Da Rin said that she feels there were no glass ceilings at OLMC: “Women of vision like Catherine McAuley, and those who have come after her, are wonderful examples to us all of what one woman with guts and determination can do to change the lives of others. Their stories inspire us to contribute in our own way to make the world a better place. As OLMC prepares to celebrate its 130th anniversary, I am confident that it will continue to strive for excellence and to promote the values that have served us so well. These values have also shaped us and the way we see the world: they have guided me in my work as a diplomat and humanitarian. I am very proud to be an alumnus of OLMC – a Mercy Girl - and to walk in the footsteps of Catherine McAuley.”
Jacquie Scott recalled a strong culture of encouragement at OLMC: “I remember always being encouraged, despite your ability. We were all treated as equals. The school taught me to be kind, thoughtful and to respect everyone.” Jacquie shared some of her life lessons: “Aim to achieve your dreams. Live well – the things we don’t do are what we often regret. Success does not come to you; you have to go and get it. If I am told that I cannot do something it makes me more determined to ensure I can: it’s about building resilience.”

On Tuesday February 6, the College welcomed back well over 50 Mercy Girls from the Class of 2017 for the HSC High Achievers Assembly.
The girls were presented with a certificate on stage in the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre, then had the chance to enjoy morning tea in the Convent Garden with each other and their former teachers.
Dux of 2017 Yamema Esber delivered an address at the assembly, providing inspiration for all Mercy Girls.
Below are some extracts from her speech.
"My HSC experience proved to me that I am blessed – to have friends who cared for me, teachers who supported me and parents who shaped the person I am today. Stay strong, be respectful, be proud of yourself and I wish you all the very best of luck for the future."
"I have found that motivation and perseverance is about respecting yourself. The primary thought that enabled me to push myself throughout school life was that I could not be happy with myself if I slacked off and didn’t try my best. If there is no respect, honour and pride in what you do, whether it be work or learning, what you achieve in life is meaningless. An important part of maintaining personal integrity and pride, even when the going gets tough, is not just working hard to avoid failure or being the best. Rather, it’s about doing what you love (e.g. subjects or sports) and striving to achieve your personal best."
"An important part of self-respect is taking time for yourself. Even though working hard to achieve a goal is important, I am not telling you to lock yourself away in your room and never emerge. I won’t lie – I did not take as many study breaks as I probably should have but you need to know your limits. It is so important to relax and replenish. I picked up a sport at the beginning of Year 12 and most weeks I gave myself one school night off from studying. Relax, read, go to the movies, take a night off occasionally, watch TV or do something that makes you happy."

In the Year of Excellence at OLMC Parramatta, the Class of 2017 has achieved fantastic results in the HSC, truly embracing the College’s philosophy to expand beyond what we know we can be.
Principal Stephen Walsh said that the OLMC community is very proud that, as a non-selective school, the College ranked in the top 100 and climbed more than 20 places since last year: “At OLMC the growth mindset is central to all learning and this is undeniably reflected in this great result.”
The College was delighted to learn that Mercy Girl Yamema Esber came First in the State in Modern History and achieved an ATAR of 99.90. Yamema is humbled by this outstanding result: “My achievements, together with those of my fellow Mercy Girls, would not have been possible without the hard work, encouragement and dedication of our teachers. I am truly blessed to have had access to the academic opportunities provided by OLMC, as well as the ongoing support of my peers, without which our collective achievements would not have been possible.”
Principal Stephen Walsh says learning at OLMC is characterised by high expectations and a growth mindset: “Students embrace challenge as essential to learning. These characteristics have been embraced by the 2017 cohort and their outstanding results in the HSC reflect the growth these young women have made over six years at OLMC.”

On Monday November 6, Mercy Girls flocked to Kavanagh Place at recess to find out their allocated Homerooms and Houses for 2018!
Director of Pastoral Care Anne-Maree Donnelly says its an exciting time in OLMC history as the College transitions to the House System and ‘House and Homeroom families’ are created.
"The Mercy Girls who are forming the new houses of Callaghan, Callan, Doyle and Kavanagh are ‘making history.’ There is energy and excitement around starting something new. For the girls remaining in the current House (Clare, McAuley, Mercedes and Stanley), they now have the duty to continue and renew their House spirit and work with their ‘Sister House.' Girls will have new lockers in their House colour in 2018, as well as new House shirts!"

In the September holidays, 39 students and 6 staff travelled to the USA for the OLMC Art, Design and Dance Tour.
It was a wonderful learning experience where students immersed themselves in the culture and history of another country.
Some highlights of the trip included visits to The Metropolitan Art Museum, The 9/11 Memorial Museum and our sister school Our Lady of Mercy Academy, along with being on stage after a Broadway show!
Below is a reflection from Katarina Butler about the visit to the Mercy school, written on the day of the visit.
This morning we paid a visit to our sister school, Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset. They were very welcoming as we followed them to their classes for the day. I attended French, Algebra and Theology classes and found out more about American schools.
The OLMA girls were excited to hear our Australian accents, asking us to pronounce different words for them. They were disappointed to hear that we don’t ride kangaroos to school and that dropbears were fake, but managed to contain their disappointment and be wonderful hosts.
There were many differences between our school and theirs, but we also saw many similarities. They still hold the same vision of Catherine McAuley, and our core beliefs are much the same.
We had to leave much too soon and were fare-welled with delicious cookies and stickers, some of us receiving small gifts from our ‘shadows’ for the day.

In mid October, Principal Stephen Walsh, Claire Thomas our Director of Mission, Sister Ailsa Mackinnon and Elizabeth Grady from Mercy Works travelled to Vanuatu to explore the potential of an immersion program for our Year 11 students.
They were hosted by Australia’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu,ex-student Ms Jenny Da Rin (1981). They attended briefing meetings on Thursday at the High Commission as well as a meeting with Bishop John Bosco of Vanuatu and Mr Simmy the Executive Director of Catholic Schools in Vanuatu.
They attended a local Catholic primary school as well as the Central School in Port Vila, followed by a visit to Montmartre College (a 7-13 co-ed boarding school) on the outskirts of Port Vila. We were made to feel most welcome at all these schools and quickly became aware of the need for resources and teacher professional development in all three of these schools. Education in Vanuatu is not compulsory and, in some areas, girls are not encouraged to complete school.
More details will be available in early 2018 for students who may wish to participate in the immersion program in Vanuatu as part of our continuing commitment to making Mercy a verb.

As part of Mercy Day celebrations in September at OLMC, it was announced that the 2017/2018 beneficiary of Mercy Tree donations would be the House of Welcome, a Sydney-based organisation run by St Francis Social Services which provides assistance to refugees and people seeking asylum.
The Mercy Tree is a social justice initiative of the College. Standing as a burst of green in the Brigid Shelley Courtyard, the Chinese Elm tree has grown to approximately 3.5 metres tall since it was first blessed and planted in 2012. Part of the donations to the Mercy Tree Gift Fund are given to charitable causes nominated by the fund’s Trustee, while the remainder is invested to provide a secure and ongoing revenue stream to support social justice programs.
The House of Welcome was founded in 2001 and provides holistic support to refugees and asylum seekers who are living in the community with minimal support options. Their services include housing, community living and family support, a drop-in centre, a weekly foodbank, skills development courses and a host of community connection programs such as a catering social enterprise, social activities, a weekly community kitchen, school holiday programs, a women’s craft hub and a men’s group.
Principal Stephen Walsh says that founder of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley, was motivated by responding to the needs of those at the margins of society: “This is a real, practical way that we can respond to the challenges facing refugees and people seeking asylum right here and now, especially in light of current policy changes. By donating to the Mercy Tree, we are making Mercy a verb!”
Ina Mullin from St Francis Social Services says the House receives no government funding: “This means we can speak out against injustice and assist people who are denied the care they need to survive. But it also means we are wholly reliant on the community for support. At times like now, the ability to speak up and provide practical assistance is more important than ever. The OLMC Mercy Tree Appeal is especially welcomed at this time as we struggle to respond to the latest government Visa changes affecting people seeking asylum. The Visa change has stripped 100 people of a living allowance and safe housing and given them six months before they must return to detention on Manus Island or Nauru or go back to the country from which they fled persecution. In NSW, not-for-profit service providers are struggling to ensure basic human needs are met. We are urgently seeking support from the community to ensure we can provide accommodation, case work, legal referrals, food and some medical expenses to all people affected,” said Ina Mullin.

On Friday September 15, OLMC Parramatta celebrated our 128th Mercy Day in the College’s newest building, the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre.
The day began with a dialogue between students, staff, Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFM Conv DD, Pastoral Worker at Detention Centres on Manus and Christmas Islands, Sr Margaret Sheppard and refugee and advocate, Mrs Deena Yako. This was a chance to hear Deena’s experience of seeking protection in Australia after journeying from Iraq. Students were given the chance to ask questions and to share their responses to the speakers’ stories. Sr Margaret invited students to become like ‘shining lamps’ of justice and compassion. Bishop Vincent, also a refugee from Vietnam during the 1970s, passionately shared the many ways Australia has the capacity to be hospitable, ‘with boundless plains to share’ towards those who seek protection.
Shortly after the dialogue, Bishop Vincent celebrated Eucharist and inspired the community to live as agents of faith, hope and mercy. After the Solemn Blessing, Congregation Leader of the Parramatta Sisters of Mercy, Sr Mary-Louise Petro challenged the community to engage in ‘contemplative action’ and to ask ourselves:
“In light of what I have heard today, what is one small action I can now do, where God’s Spirit is inspiring me to live and be mercy?

Four inspirational forum speakers challenged women to embrace all opportunities and to back themselves at the inaugural OLMC Women in Leadership Forum on Wednesday August 23, 2017 in the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre at OLMC.
Linda Burney MP, Shadow Minister for Human Services and Labor Member for Barton, and Samantha Armytage, Media Personality and co-host of Channel Seven’s Sunrise, were joined by Author Felicity Castagna and Dr Yijiao Jiang, Senior Lecturer at MQ Energy and Environmental Contaminants Research Centre, on a panel that explored the challenges and opportunities faced by women today.
Mercy Girls and their families, representatives from the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, students and staff from seven other Sydney schools and staff and friends of OLMC listened to the speakers’ addresses before joining in the conversation through a Q&A session and a live Twitter and SMS Feed.
Principal Stephen Walsh says that, in many ways, this event goes to the heart of what OLMC Parramatta is about; “For almost 130 years, OLMC has been equipping women to push the boundaries and at the forum, we heard personal experiences and insights from four outstanding women who do this well in their respective fields. We are passionate about giving our girls access to strong female role models and this is one of the reasons we initiated the annual OLMC Women in Leadership Forum. Every day at the College, through events like this, but also through smaller conversations, it is made abundantly clear that the OLMC story is about strong women of Mercy making an impact.”
The Forum speakers shared heartfelt advice, both from a practical and big picture perspective. Linda Burney MP told the audience that we all have something remarkable to share as women and it is important to remind yourself of what makes you who you are. She shared her seven ‘Ls’ of advice to Listen, Learn, Lose well, have Limits, demonstrate Loyalty, Live well and to think of life as a journey, a Long game. Samantha Armytage encouraged girls to identify and hold onto their values and to get to know themselves and treat themselves kindly. She challenged girls to be open to opportunities, brave, resilient, to work hard and seek out mentors.
A key theme that came through from each speaker, according to Deputy Principal Marie Wood, was the importance of being true to yourself – of being authentic; “Their wonderful stories were funny and inspiring and reminded us all to never give up believing in yourself and to live your life with courage and confidence.”

On Friday July 28, we welcomed back our Year 12, 2016 girls for the Alumnae Welcome event.
It was great to see so many familiar smiling faces as the girls caught up with each other, spoke to their teachers, picked up their Misericordia, enjoyed afternoon tea and took a walk through the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre. The girls heard all about the post OLMC opportunities available to them as young Mercy women from Christine Robertson, the President of the Alumnae Committee, Sister Mary-Louise Petro, Congregation Leader of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, Gabby Scanlon, Coordinator of the Young Mercy Network, Marie Wood and Principal Stephen Walsh.
Thanks to the Alumnae Committee for their support of this event, to the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta for your support and attendance and to the Year 11 girls who acted as hosts for the event and the Flute Ensemble who provided entertainment.

In recent years, the OLMC community has been reflecting and acting on reducing our carbon footprint and waste. In the spirit of stewardship and sustainability in the College, the EcOLMC group requested ‘paper only’ blue bins. These 8 blue bins are for PAPER ONLY. Red bins are for plastics.
The College also has a staff Sustainability Committee which was key to getting this initiative implemented.
Principal Stephen Walsh says Stewardship is taken very seriously at OLMC:
"The word steward is actually referenced in the Creation Story in the Book of Genesis when God commands that man hold dominion over and responsibility for all of his creations - the land and sea, animals, fish and birds. Stewardship is the grateful and responsible celebration of the sacred gifts God has given us to do the work He is calling us to do. This bounty of creation comes with a responsibility to care for our unique and fragile world. In today’s context, we may use terms such as the ecosystem, our total environment or even our global planet. We also speak of our need to think globally and act locally. This is in particular reference to our own OLMC locality and the litter we find in the playground or the wrong use of our colour coded rubbish and recycling bins."

It is with great excitement that we announce that OLMC is undertaking the production of a special book about the history of the College to celebrate 130 years of Mercy education. The book will be available for purchase in late 2019.
Leaders of Learning for Drama and History, Sean Travers and Anthony Llewellyn-Evans, are leading this exciting project and research has begun! Our project leaders are on the hunt for any College-related materials you might have hidden away. If you have any photos taken at the College or at a College event, please scan and send them through with the year (or at least the decade) – please identify if you know any names of people in the photo. We are also after photos of Memorabilia – uniforms, badges, diaries, hats, school exercise books etc.
Please email aevans@olmc.nsw.edu.au with details of any materials or with any other questions.

Held this year in the first week of June, Wellbeing Week at OLMC saw students and staff join in a series of events and initiatives aimed at highlighting the importance of cultivating positive mental and physical health and wellbeing.
Inaugurated in 2015, Wellbeing Week has fast become a favourite week in the OLMC calendar, with the College grounds transformed into a colourful and lively hub of activity with a positive vibe. Senior student leaders delight in organising a range of activities including the Lunchtime Lip Sync Battle (where teachers compete against students), Zumba Classes, Ball Pits (designed to promote conversation between girls from different Year Groups), Handball, Bike and Blend and a host of craft activities including mindful colouring-in. On one day during the week, a free breakfast was provided for students by the Student Representative Council.
2017 Head Girl Dunya Vasic says we often only realise how important our wellbeing is when it is absent from our lives: “It is arguably the most important aspect of our lives; in order to live out the best life we can, we must look after ourselves and each other. This is ultimately the drive behind Wellbeing Week, an initiative that we are so proud to have at OLMC. It's a week that brings our attention to aspects of our wellbeing which may need some improvement – this could be mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual. We not only dedicate one week to our wellbeing, we encourage lifelong awareness and commitment and this week serves as a reminder and celebration.”
A highlight of the 2017 schedule was a visit to the College by Australian actress and wellbeing advocate Marny Kennedy. Mercy Girls packed the new Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre at lunchtime on Wednesday to hear Marny share her story and make a heartfelt appeal to the girls to look after their physical and mental health, to ask for help when they need it and not to compare themselves to others

On the afternoon of Monday May 15, 2017, over 380 mothers, grandmothers, aunts, female carers joined Mercy Girls for the much-loved annual Mother Daughter Mass.
This year, due to an increase in numbers, the Mass was held in the new Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre. Mrs Kirwan, mother of Bridget in Year 12, shared a powerful reflection on the subtleties and integration of Mercy Values in her daily life as mother. Mrs Kirwan also shared the many coincidental familial connections to Callan, the Irish home of the Parramatta Sisters of Mercy.
The Eucharist was led by College Chaplain Fr Walter Fogarty. Many thanks to the staff and students who made this event possible. Thank you also to the P&F fathers who assisted with the serving of the supper.

On the afternoon of Friday April 28, EcOLMC, the cocurricular group dedicated to raising sustainability awareness, held their movie night, showing Before the Flood in the Edith Angel Hall after school.
Two Mercy Girls who attended - share their thoughts:
"We all thoroughly enjoyed the movie. We were fascinated by the drastic effects of climate change but also the fact that, together, we can all make a change. We hope in the future that such nights can continue to raise awareness throughout our Mercy community and continue to exhibit our Mercy Value of Stewardship: - Sophia and Jasmine

The April Holiday Mercy Music & Performance Academy workshops were a great chance to develop musical talents and meet new friends! Students had the chance to collaborate in an ensemble setting, meet like-minded musicians and development their skills, technique and overall musicality. All three workshops were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended!
The Big Sing Vocal Workshop with professional singing teacher Amelia Nell took place on April 20. Nell’s experiences at both the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing and Australian Girls Choir have contributed to her holistic approach towards teaching students. With a focus on positive learning, fostering individuality, building confidence and mastering technique, students were able to develop their solo and ensemble performance skills. The workshop also guided students on the best ways to prepare for performances and exams by practising activities, which developed vocal production, breathing pitch and tone.
April 21 saw the Christina Creede Music Centre transformed for two very different workshops! Under the instruction of professional drum teacher Rob Di Marzo, the Big Bash workshop introduced students to the wild world of percussion. Rob’s experiences in various ensembles and performance venues inspires students to recognise that percussion is everywhere. It just takes a little bit of creativity, imagination and flexibility to turn anything into an instrument. The workshop explored various aspects including the origins of drumming, score reading, drumming techniques and were even encouraged to improvise their own creative piece.
The Seasonal Strings workshop, on the same day, helped students develop a variety of ensemble and performance skills. Suzuki-trained and qualified string teacher Kirrily Biskupic facilitated the workshop, which focused on a love for music expression and appreciation. A key factor of her workshop included fine-tuning student’s playing technique, as well as improving their tone and resonance. Students were instructed on the importance of mastering the foundations and basics in all aspects, including aural and theoretical knowledge, in order to express themselves through music.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Ms Jenny Da Rin, returned to her Alma Mater on Thursday March 30, to speak with Year 11 students and meet with staff and the College Leadership Team.
Ms Da Rin is in Sydney as part of the government’s consultation program for the development of the new Foreign Policy White Paper. She joins over one hundred Heads of Mission who returned to Canberra for a two-day meeting to discuss how Australia can navigate its foreign, trade and development policies on the global stage.
Appointed as High Commissioner in November 2016, Ms Da Rin was a Senior Career Officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) prior to this appointment and before that, Assistant Secretary, Pacific Bilateral & New Zealand Branch. She also served as Senior Adviser to the Minister for Defence (2010) and Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs (2009-10). She holds a Master of Laws from the Australian National University and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Ms Da Rin toured the College to get a sense of continuity and change at OLMC,before moving to the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre, to speak with Year 11 students. Jenny shared her path to her current role, including describing her final years of school and her path after she left in 1981, providing words of wisdom and encouragement to her fellow Mercy Girls.
Her time at OLMC Parramatta, according to Ms Da Rin, left a lasting impact on her life: “When I was at OLMC there were still Sisters of Mercy teaching at the school and living in the convent. One of the things that has stuck with me ever since was that Sister Janet (who was College Principal at the time) never spoke about a glass ceiling; we may have imposed on ourselves what we thought were the norms for girls but she did not ever do that. She thought we could do anything we wanted to do and she aimed to equip us with the skills necessary. I have come to recognise later in life that this is one of the key things I took away from my schooling here.”
Principal Stephen Walsh said the College was very honoured to have Ms Da Rin visit. “Her key advice to our young girls was to be confident, be capable, and not to take no for an answer and this is so important for girls to hear. It is clear that Jenny’s sense of taking action for the good of others, helping those most vulnerable was a key motivator in her path, as responding to the devastation of the 2004 Tsunami in Banda Aceh was a key watershed in her life. She is a true example in many ways of Mercy Excellence. Ms Da Rin highlighted the importance of being prepared to engage in regional and global issues. We have to acknowledge the significant role we play as a country in shaping global outcomes and Mercy Women have a responsibility to have a voice. I feel it is our role to encourage and build the skills and resilience of young Mercy Women to take their place in these forums as critical thinkers and to challenge the status quo – this is core of our Mercy tradition.”

On Tuesday March 14, 2017, ex-student Janice Kerrison was awarded the 2016 Catherine McAuley Alumnae Award at a special assembly in the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre.
Hailing from the OLMC class of 1956, Janice Kerrison (nee Duck) completed her nursing and midwifery training at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and St Anne’s in Perth after completing her high school studies. Ms Kerrison has worked since then as a Community Nurse and as an Immunisation Specialist.
Janice Kerrison has a long history of community involvement and volunteering which includes being Secretary and eventually President of Red Cross Blaxland branch, serving as President of the Ladies Auxiliary at Blaxland Primary School and taking on the role of Secretary of the Blaxland High School P&C Association. She was an inaugural member of Community Aid Committee (sponsored by Penrith Community Health) which became the Lower Blue Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and to this day, continues to serve residents from Lapstone to Warrimoo. In the early 1980s, she played a fundamental role in establishing the Riding School For The Disabled Centre in Blaxland which involved extensive lobbying, negotiations, and project management on her part. The centre has grown and continues to operate today; “The RDA gives rides to about sixty children and adults per week and the Community Centre, which I still manage, is used by four separate community organisations and also has been upgraded,” said Mrs Kerrison.
Principal Stephen Walsh said Janice Kerrison is a true Mercy Girl; “She has dedicated much of her life to the service of others, especially those in most need. Her key role in helping to build the Riding for the Disabled centre in the lower Blue Mountains is just one important example.”
Ms Kerrison said her time at OLMC profoundly influenced her path: “Throughout my life, the values inculcated by my family and through my time at OLMC has prompted me to act rather than just wring my hands or procrastinate. I strongly feel someone has to actually make things happen and act to make a difference. This is how the spirit of Catherine McAuley has influenced my life. She made a difference and I have tried, and in a small way succeeded, to do the same.”

On Sunday March 12 the College held the 2017 Open Day, welcoming one of the biggest crowds of visitors seen in recent years.
Over 400 of our students assisted throughout the day running guided tours of the facilities, worked in classrooms assisting teachers, assisted with the catering and generally making our visitors feel welcome. Parents and Alumnae played very important roles helping the day go smoothly through things such as the Sausage Sizzle and also by welcoming visitors.
Principal Stephen Walsh says this is a tremendous vote of trust and confidence in the school by the families in our community: "I firmly believe that the OLMC girls are our best assets and demonstrate the important Mercy Values of hospitality, compassion and excellence."

On Wednesday March 8, Senator Deborah O’Neil, Shadow Assistant Minister for Innovation and the Shadow Assistant Minister for Mental Health spoke at a special lunchtime International Women’s Day event at OLMC.
Mercy Girls, Sisters of Mercy and OLMC parents all joined with staff and students to hear Senator O’Neill speak about the need to ‘be bold for change.’
Senator O'Neil encouraged Mercy Girls to "Be bold, back yourself and step forward, if you don’t a bloke will and chances are he is no more qualified to than you."
She also said that its important that we celebrate International Women's Day in 2017 because we still don’t have gender equity: "There are still many fields where women are underrepresented and it’s a waste of talent and capacity – we can do better!"
Principal Stephen Walsh says he is passionate about encouraging the community to embrace the theme for International Women's Day 2017 - #BeBoldForChange: “It’s so important that women are part of decision making especially as they have such an understanding of community needs. Some of the statistics are particularly telling: Globally, only 47% of women have an account at a formal financial institution. Less than 20% of landholders around the world are women. Women make up just 23% of national parliaments worldwide. These need to change and we need to be bold in order to effect that change.”
International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8 is an important opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women because visibility and awareness help drive positive change for women.

On Friday February 17, the new Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre at Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta was officially opened by Dr Anne Bunde – Birouste and blessed by the Most Reverend Vincent Long Van Nguyen OFMConv DD, Bishop of Parramatta. The special afternoon event was attended by Sister Ailsa Mackinnon, the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, members of the College Board, and Alumnae, College staff, students and parents, as well as a host of special guests including Dr Geoff Lee MP.
Named after Sister Ailsa Mackinnon, who was Principal of the College from 1990 to 2004, the new community centre is located at the corner of O’Connell Street and Victoria Road; it features an indoor multi-purpose sports and gathering place (seating approximately 1200 people) as well as four teaching and learning spaces, a roof top outdoor sport area and a gymnasium.
Sister Ailsa Mackinnon says she is honoured to have a building named after her and is so pleased that it is a community centre dedicated to physical education; “To call it a community centre speaks volumes about the importance of community to OLMC. It’s also a beautifully constructed building that is light and airy with plenty of space for physical activities. Students are encouraged to reach their potential at OLMC and it is important to have facilities such as this building to help enable this. I feel that naming buildings after Sisters of Mercy helps to keep the history of the College alive and reminds the community of the importance of living the Mercy Values.”
Principal Stephen Walsh said the community was very excited about the opportunities the brand new community centre will bring; “The magnificent new sports facilities and contemporary learning spaces will perfectly complement the mix of learning areas already in use at the College. It will be especially wonderful to have a space large enough to fit the whole school and guests; it will further enhance our very strong sense of community.”
The Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre is the final element of an ambitious Master Plan which began in 2008 and saw the construction of the Janet Woods Building (featuring multiple, fully-equipped Science labs, a new library, state of the art Food Technology spaces and a botany room), a new dedicated Student Centre, a Dance Studio and the purpose-built Christina Creede Music Centre. Stanton Dahl Architects were the architects for the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre project while Reitsma Constructions Pty Limited were the builders.

PDHPE Teacher Amanda Farrugia has led the GWS Western Sydney team into the first ever season of the Women's League in that code.
Being named captain was a total shock, according to Amanda. "It was a complete surprise but then this wave of privilege and honour came over me and I thought this was an amazing opportunity - it’s an honour and I’m humbled.”
Amanda says her passion and leadership in the sport will help her motivate the next generation of young women.
“I want the girls at OLMC to realise what a wonderful game it is and in some ways break down those gender barriers and gender stereotypes that still exist, particularly culturally. The challenges, the friendships, the leadership skills you can develop playing this game are totally underrated."

On Australia Day 2017 17-year-old Gabriella Wehbe was named Young Parramatta Citizen of the Year from more than 50 nominees.
Gabriella completed her HSC at the College while undergoing treatment for a rare cancer: metastic alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.
“It was a hard time doing the HSC and going through cancer, so I really looked at my school work and volunteer opportunities as a chance to take my mind off my sickness,” Gabriella said.
“This award has inspired me to do more volunteer work, because I see all the people that were nominated and I think that they are really contributing and doing great things for the community.”
While in her final years of high school Gabriella also helped raise $200,000 for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Foundation, a cancer treatment centre in Sydney. Gabriella also received the Arthur Phillip Society award.

Congratulations to all those involved in Symphony under the Stars in Parramatta on Saturday January 28. We had a large number of current students and Alumnae involved in playing as part of The Emerging Artists Ensemble. The Ensemble played wonderfully and should be very proud of how they represented the College.
Mercy Girls performed as part of the 18-piece western Sydney string ensemble which supported the main orchestra, The ensemble consisted of young musicians from Sydney Conservatorium of Music and The Mercy Music and Performance Academy, OLMC, Parramatta Marist High School, Elite Violin Academy and Parramatta Cello School.
“We’ve planned a high-energy, uplifting repertoire that includes a variety of popular contemporary hits such as Sia’s Chandelier as well as traditional Latin American and Irish scores,” said OLMC Director of Music Performance who was conductor on the evening.

The 2016 HSC Class has achieved impressive results with State rankings improved from last year and multiple girls placing at the top of their cohorts for individual subjects:
Principal Stephen Walsh said the community is very proud of the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2016: "The HSC results are a product of diligence and dedication. High expectations and motivation, alongside a readiness to embrace challenge as an opportunity for deeper learning, is what characterised the Class of 2016’s approach to their studies. In the footsteps of Catherine McAuley, OLMC continues to empower and equip Mercy Girls with the necessary 21st century skills to be critical, creative and refl ective thinkers, collaborating together in a caring and supportive environment as learners, leaders, teachers. The Class of 2016 have followed in the footsteps of the many women who have gone before them - expanding beyond what we know we can be.”
