OLMC Celebrates 130 Years: The Wizard of Oz

The College's recent production of the Wizard of Oz in early June was a great success with over 1000 tickets sold across the three nights!

This was a truly special way for our community to come together to celebrate our 130th Anniversary Year.

It was a full house in the Edith Angel Hall each night and the incredibly professional production was a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students and staff involved. The spectacular performances each involved over 90 students - both on stage and backstage.

It was great to see so many ex-students join us for this wonderful celebration of Mercy Education!

Women in Leadership Forum

Mercy Girls were joined by College staff, parents, College alumnae and students from local schools in the Ailsa Mackinnon Community Centre on Wednesday  29 May for the 2019 Women in Leadership Forum

Four inspirational forum speakers from a variety of fields shared their perspectives on women in leadership and discussed how each of us can boldly expand beyond what we know we can be. Edwina Bartholomew - Journalist and Presenter with the Seven Network, was joined by Annabelle Chauncy OAM - CEO and Founding Director of School for Life Foundation, Liz Scully - Chair, NSW Labor Women’s Forum and Chair, Parramatta Women’s Shelter and Belinda Woolford - CEO Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western Sydney.

You can read more about the forum in the latest edition of OLMsCene Magazine HERE.

Nominations Open for Catherine McAuley Alumnae Award 2019

All ex-students are invited to consider nominating a fellow classmate who meets the criteria for nomination, and whose story would be an inspiration to current students for the 2019 Award.

We seek nominations of an ex student who exemplifies the following:

  1. A person who has made a difference, through her influence or impact, to those whose lives she touches; and
  2. A person whose contributions are demonstrated in the home, in local communities or on the national or international stage, beyond what would normally arise from promotion to senior leadership positions or to the prestige of one’s place of employment.

Some example of the ways in which this woman may have demonstrated a commitment to Mercy Values include:

  • Commitment to and involvement in social justice activities benefiting local, Australian or international communities; and/or
  • Active engagement in voluntary work beyond paid employment; and/or
  • Being a role model or mentor through personal, academic or professional achievement
  • We are especially keen to recognise Mercy women who may not have received community acknowledgement or prominence to date through public recognition or other awards.

Alliance of Girls Schools Survey

Alumnae who graduated in 2013 or earlier are invited to complete a survey which is part of a new study commissioned by the Alliance of Girls' Schools Australasia. Researchers from QUT and the University of Canberra are researching the degree, career and life outcomes of graduates of girls' schools so they can paint a picture of life beyond the school gates for women who attended single-sex schools.

The survey closes on 16 August 2019. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr Rebecca English or Assoc Prof Raechel Johns via r.english@qut.edu.au or raechel.johns@canberra.edu.au.

In March, attendees heard from Michael Lloyd-White from the World Kindness Project about why he is passionate about kindness and his journey to becoming CEO of World Kindness USA.

It was wonderful to see many ex-students attend both events.

SAVE the date for the next Mercy Futures on the evening of Tuesday 3 September and look out for an email invitation closer to the date. Mercy Futures is held in the Catherine McAuley Rooms of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta Congregation Centre

Support Parramatta Women's Community Shelters through the Mercy Tree

Women's Community Shelters (WCS) are the 2019 beneficiary of Mercy Tree Fundraising.

WCS works with local communities to provide more safe havens for women (and their children). WCS offers vulnerable women at risk of homelessness or domestic violence shelter, active case management, support, dignity, self-esteem and a chance to start anew, through the establishment, operation and/or supervision and support of Women’s Community Shelters and transitional housing.

WCS is currently working to establish and open a women’s shelter in Parramatta, which is due to open later in 2019 (the images below show the shelter in development).

CEO of WCS Annabelle Daniel said fundraising by OLMC would have a huge impact by allowing WCS to do more of what they do; “Every time we open a shelter, it’s full within a week and, with the help of the OLMC community, we can continue to offer more bed nights to more women and children in a safe and secure environment.”

You are invited to make a donation to the 2019 Mercy Tree Appeal.
