As part of Refugee Week, members of our school community gathered for a breakfast event. With over 70 in attendance, this was a wonderful opportunity to open our minds and hearts.
Ms Ambreen Ghazala, our Library Curator, opened the morning by explaining what it means to be an Asylum Seeker, as someone who has experienced this journey. Mr Tony Tang, a valued member of our teaching staff, shared his childhood experience as a refugee, reminding us of the resilience that lies within lived stories.
We were honoured to welcome Fabio and Jacqui from the House of Welcome, who spoke about their organisation’s impact on the lives of refugees in our local area. Their mission to provide wraparound support - to help people not just survive, but thrive - left a lasting impression. Farid from Mercy Works brought the global perspective, highlighting that over 120 million people around the world are currently displaced. He explained the vital distinction between refugees and asylum seekers and shared his deeply personal story as a refugee from Afghanistan.
This powerful morning of storytelling stirred hearts and minds alike. It reminded us all that kindness, compassion, and community are among the greatest gifts we can offer - and that they truly do go a long way.
