We were privileged with the opportunity to represent OLMC at the Parramatta Youth Alliance inaugural meeting, held at the PHIVE building in the heart of Parramatta. Over 20 students from across the Parramatta electorate were invited to share insights on key issues affecting young people and our wider community.
The meeting kicked off with an address from The Hon. Jihad Dib MP, who drew on experiences from his immigration journey and time as a principal, explaining how they inspired him to make a difference as the Minister for Youth Justice. He reminded us that a leader must ‘never forget where they come from,’- a memorable piece of advice that we will carry forward.
Then, we heard from the Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Donna Davis MP, who emphasised the importance of minorities, like youth, having a voice in agencies for change. She also reflected on the value of diversity in leadership, highlighting how her diverse perspective as a woman shape her political work.
Finally, we collaborated in table groups. We ranked a variety of issues affecting the Parramatta Council by order of importance, relevance, and urgency. It was concluded that mental health, consent in relationships, and homelessness are perennial issues – issues we are proud to say OLMC actively seeks to address through advocacy and action.
The night ended with a photo opportunity with Donna Davis and a strong sense of fulfillment. It was a valuable opportunity to share ideas, connect with like-minded peers, and grow as leaders.
