Dame Enid Lyons Oratory Award

Dame Enid Lyons Oratory Award

Late last year, a new competition was launched that must rate as one of the most prestigious available for girls’ schools. Following on from the Lawrence Campbell Oratory Award for boys, a competition that has run for 90 years and has had winners including former Prime Minister Malcolm Campbell and former NSW Premier Nick Greiner, girls now have a parallel competition named after Dame Enid Lyons, the first woman to be elected to Federal Cabinet.

Our Head Girl, Gabby Fleming, not only entered the competition but was successful in reaching the Grand Final, held at Sydney Opera House two weeks ago. The requirements were to deliver an 8-minute impromptu talk from a choice of three topics. Not surprisingly, the standard was exceptional and while Gabby did not walk away with the main prize, her performance was a reflection of the huge amount of preparation she put into reaching the final. Several students went along to support Gabby and, if not for the recent train strikes, the number would have been much more. Congratulations, Gabby. The whole College is proud of you.
